Changelog

• Added a sentence at the end of the abstract for the index results.

• The structure of the paper was changed from:

to:

 3. Refractive index theory
 4. Experimental setup and procedures
 5. Results
 6. Conclusions

• Added a short introduction to the Oxygen diffusion theory section.
• Expanded section 2.2.3 significantly to add Braden's simulation. This includes the new figures 4 and 5.
• The simulation is also shown in the annealing plot in Fig. 12. The relevant section in the text has been updated to reflect that addition & give values for the fit to z=A√t.
• Changed symbols in section 2.3 so that they are different from symbols in 2.2.
• Figure 7 of section 2.3 has been recreated with a different set of parameters that gives a sharper boundary.
• Figure 14 includes the non-irradiated rod measurements. I discuss them in the text. Plus, the discussion for the rest of the results has also been improved.
• All the plots have been regenerated using color palettes, markers, and line styles that make them color-blind and grayscale friendly.
• Added Figure 10 to better explain the refractive index measurement.
• Acknowledgments: added thanks to GIF++ staff.
