Restoring Your Identity

Once you have backed up your key, you should be able open Planetary on the new device and restore it using the steps below. If you are migrating your key to an app other than Planetary, follow the instructions for that app. Migrating your key presents many opportunities to create a Forked Feed which is very bad! Exercise caution and get help if you need it.
- Launch Planetary. If you are presented with the onboarding screens you must go through them. Feel free to enter a fake name. You can delete this profile later.
- In Planetary, tap your Avatar / profile icon in the top left to open the side menu
- From the side menu, navigate through
Settings > Advanced Settings > Dangerous and powerful debug menu
. - Once you're in the debug menu, scroll down to the "Configurations" section. You should see at least three options there:
- One with the name of your current profile and a purple check mark
- A button titled "Create new configuration and secret"
- A button titled "Add new configuration from secret"
- Tap "Add new configuration from secret"
- Paste your key into the box on the next page and tap "Next"
- Scroll down to the Networks section and tap the row that says "SSB"
- Tap "Select" in the top right of your screen.
- Tap "Advanced Settings" again.
- Tap "Dangerous and powerful debug menu"
- Scroll down to the Configurations section. You should see the key you just imported. It's name will be the date and time you created it.
- Optional: You can tap on the cell for your new profile and rename it. You can also tap the cell for the profile you created during onboarding and delete it.
- From the Debug menu, tap "Logout and login"
- Reopen the app
- Warning! At this point you will be using Planetary with your migrated key. It is important that you let your device fully sync with the network before using Planetary. Your device has to download your entire feed from your friends before it is safe to use. Failing to do this will create a Forked Feed, rendering your identity unusable. When you see all your old posts show up in your Profile then it is safe to begin using Planetary. Alternatively, if you are migrating from another installation of Planetary you can check the number of Published message by navigating to the Debug menu -> tap on your configuration -> scroll down to Statistics. When both devices have the same number of Published messages then it is safe to use Planetary again.
- If you haven't already, delete your key on the device/app you are migrating from.
- When you are fully synced it's a good time to publish a message to make sure your friends can still see you!
If you made it this far, congratulations! Migrating your key will be easier someday, but you get bragging rights for doing it the old-fashioned way.
