Organization of the recovery

Used tyres can be collected using different systems. In France, it is a producer responsibility: the manufacturers and importers of new tyres take responsibility for collecting, recovering and recycling them. They have thus created dedicated eco-organisations like Aliapur, which collect an eco-contribution for each new tyre.

The system is not the same in every country, for example in Europe different systems coexist.

Three different ways to recycle used tyres

Re-use or retreading

Re-use is the driving force behind all recycling actions. It corresponds to extending the lifespan of a product in order to avoid its transformation into waste. The product is re-used as is or after repairs that allow it to be used safely. 18% of tyres collected in 2016 by the Aliapur sector were destined for re-use.

Material recycling

Material recycling is processing and transforming end-of-life tyres, making possible new use in another form, for example as shred, granulate or powder. For small quantities, it may also refer to whole tyres, used in particular in certain applications in Public Works. More than 44% of tyres collected in 2016 by the Aliapur sector were destined for material recycling.

Energy Recovery

Energy recovery is essentially the use of end-of-life tyre shred or whole tyres as a replacement fuel for the production of energy. This energy is used to provide heat and/or electricity. It is thus the calorific value of the tyre that is sought when the tyre is burnt. 38% of tyres collected in 2016 by the Aliapur sector were destined for energy recovery.
