For its next major release, I think Zaino should take on a new name.

The first Spanish to English translation of zaino is defined as "treacherous."

Treacherous comes from the same root as "trick" also adjacent to cheat, characterized by treason, or violation of allegiance. That is, deceptive and unreliable. Other connotations include being risky, precarious or dangerous.

I think this is very funny. But maybe other potential users would not be attracted to this software for this reason?

Hey! We have been made aware of this and I am not opposed to a change, I think its finding something everyone is happy with.

Originally "Zaino" was put forward as in Italian it translates roughly to "chestnut horse" which we thought worked well with "Zebra", I do see that this could be an issue though, especially when privacy and security are Zaino's two top priorities so will raise this again and see what people think.

But.. if you're trusting the proxy, you're doing it wrong. That an intermediary is treacherous (actually specifically a treacherous horse) seems to be a nice reminder that there is a MITM.

That having been said. I didn't pick the name. I'll leave it to that person to defend it, if they so choose.

Some clarifications:

  • In Italian it means "backpack". And it's the most common translation that appears on google search if you type just "zaino meaning", as it is, ofc, a very common word.
  • In Spanish it can mean "dark", "mischievous" as well as "chestnut horse". I only ever heard it referred to horses, and so would most Spanish speaking people.
  • In English, it has no inherent meaning as far as I'm concerned, nor do I think that it sounds like anything specific without looking it up (although, I'm not an English native, so I'll leave that last statement for you guys to corroborate).

All things considered, when reading the name i think that:

  • Spanish speakers would associate it with a horse
  • Italian speakers with a backpack
  • English speakers would not think much of it, and the ones that do, are more likely to find the italian translation. Unless they specifically search "zaino meaning in spanish".

Some results for "zaino meaning"

Now, I think that all the above, paired with a short explanation on the readme and/or a horse picture/logo would make it overly clear.

We all have literal Daemons 😈 😈 on our Unix systems after all, don't we? 🤣

Anyways, changing the name if fine by me if decided so. Don't think we can find many more horseoids whose name start with Z tho.
