I think having crossplay between modern systems and real Win9x systems would be a really good feature to have. Would this be doable?

IPXWrapper makes use of some APIs that were introduced in Windows 2000, it'd be technically possible to dumb down portions of it when running on 98 I think, but an easier alternative might be to use the native IPX driver on 98 and IPXWrapper using real IPX encapsulation on newer systems.

Maybe, though that would be limiting it to LAN, right?

Other than using a layer 2 or "bridged" VPN (i.e. one that forwards Ethernet frames), yeah

So what games are people using Windows 98 (VMs?) to play these days - what runs on 98 but not 2000/XP?
