Software Engineer, Medical Imaging

Neuralink is seeking a creative and motivated engineer to develop novel multi-modal medical imaging software suite for planning and control of a high-precision medical robotics. The engineer will work in an interactive, highly multidisciplinary team across neuroscience, medical devices, and materials science/microengineered systems, and is expected to contribute and learn in multiple domains.

Make a video about:

  • integrating, using, and extending modern medical imaging software libraries
  • algorithmic development skills: segmentation, registration, warping, artifact correction, path optimization
  • strong awareness of imaging physics and fundamentals, including MR, CT, OCT, DIC, etc.
  • working knowledge of robotics essential; ability to tightly integrate with low-level motor-control and constraint avoidance strong plus
  • proven record of delivering and refining high-reliability code, including unit testing, type safety, code documentation, and code instrumentation

Software Engineer, Infrastructure & Tooling

Neuralink is looking for experienced and motivated software engineers to build a wide array of internal tools and infrastructure in anticipation of a petabyte-scale neuroscience program. Projects include building out a web-based experiment management and control system; near-real-time processing on gigabit+ data streams via complex algorithms defined by other teams; developing company-wide diagnostics and metrics; and more.

  • Fluency in multiple major programming languages such as C++, Python, Ruby, or Scala
  • Experience with functional and imperative styles, and strong and dynamic type systems
  • The ability to use tests, type safety, and other tools to produce highly reliable code
  • Experience with distributed systems and a real-world understanding of the myriad ways the network can cause problems
  • Experience using version control systems like Git and working within a code review workflow
  • Familiarity with deploying software into a Linux environment; experience with 12-factor PaaSes such as Heroku a plus.
  • Knowledge of a range of database and message queue technologies like PostgresSQL, Redis, MongoDB, Neo4J, RabbitMQ, ZeroMQ, and their tradeoffs.

Software Engineer, Embedded Systems & Firmware

Neuralink is looking for a experienced and motivated low-level software engineers. Projects you might work on include writing the code that runs "on head" mediating between the physical bio-device interface and the high level software interfaces, or writing low-level robotics control software to drive sophisticated novel neurosurgical robotics, among many other possibilities.

  • Experience with ARM, x86, assembly, system BIOS and hardware/software integration
  • Experience in firmware and device drivers development
  • Programming experience on Linux in Python, C, C++, Verilog, or VHDL.
  • Familiarity setting up embedded tool chains, build, and debugging environments
  • Experience with Wi-Fi, BLE, USB, TCP/IP stacks in an embedded environment

Neuralink is seeking a lab technician with close attention to detail and excellent fine motor skills. Experience with experience stereo-microscope aided microassembly is a strong plus. Some basic chemistry and biology experience requested, but training will be provided. It is expected that the ideal candidate will interface with the greater biomedical team, with open options for contributing to device and process development.

Microfabrication Engineer (MEMS & Sensors)

Neuralink is seeking a microfabrication engineer to lead the development and fabrication of a new class of biological probes. This involves the full suite of MEMS processing methodologies, with a particular emphasis on thin-film and polymer systems, as well as working knowledge of biocompatibility, testing, metrology, chemistry, nanoscale effects like diffusion and pinholes, surface energy and stress calculation, and bonding.

The ideal candidate has experience fabricating and testing probes for use in the life sciences, and is conversant in the related disciplines. This includes tight integration with packaging & lifetime testing, as well as with the greater biology, surgery, and research team.

  • Experience working in a cleanroom, preferably a shared-facility, like Berkeley Nanolab.
  • Strong knowledge of process engineering and quality refinement.
  • Contact lithography necessary; stepper lithography strong plus.
  • Thin-film metalization, patterning, adhesion.
  • Dielectric application and patterning
  • Plasma RIE and PECVD
  • Polymer chemistry & surface modification
  • Strong knowledge of materials science and micromechanical engineering

Mechatronics Engineer

Neuralink is seeking a senior mechatronics engineer to design, fabricate, and test next-generation medical robotics. This application entails tight integration with MEMS technologies as well as novel surgical procedures, and hence strong emphasis is placed on high-precision, high-repeatability mechanical motion, as well as high reliability and failsafe design. Candidate should have extensive experience designing and machining multi-DOF actuators; experience designing for specified stiffness and tolerance; knowledge of mechanical-resonance dampening and/or prevention; and creativity in mechanical chaining and actuation. Experience working on near micro-scale mechanical devices (e.g. watch mechanisms) a plus. Experience working with optical systems strong plus. In this role, you will work closely with imaging-guided surgery software engineers and the surgical team, hence knowledge of bioengineering is desirable, but not at all required.

  • Excellent skills with CAD software such as SolidWorks, CATIA or NX
  • Excellent mechanical simulation for loading, motion, static and dynamic friction
  • Experience with conventional machining
  • Ability to design and tune high-speed and high-precision servo systems
  • Awareness of failback-safe and closed-loop electromechanical system design

Medical Device Engineer

Neuralink is seeking a lead engineer with experience in designing, validating, and in-vivo testing implanted medical devices, including hermetic sealing, biocompatibility, additive and subtractive machining, and surgical technique development. Knowledge of regulartory control and traceability / quality assurance systems essential. This person will interface closely with packaging, IC, MEMS, and surgical teams.

  • Experience in designing implanted medical devices
  • Strong knowledge of metal and ceramic materials science, brazing, welding, metallurgy

Neuralink is looking for an electrochemist to develop conductive films and inks, characterize microelectrodes and dielectrics, and perform failure analysis on micro-devices. Establish electrochemical systems for R&D and automated testing. Develop practical process solutions for high volume production. Surface characterization of thin-film microelectrodes, e.g. roughness, charge injection capacity, stability.

Biomedical Engineer

Neuralink is seeking a biologist or biomedical engineer with interest in brain cellular architecture and the blood brain barrier. This person will seek to mechanically, chemically, and biologically program the interface between brain and micro-scale implanted devices and characterize the cellular structure of this interface through post-mortem histology or time-lapse in-vivo imaging. This is a very open-ended role, for which we are willing to consider a wide range of backgrounds.

An ideal candidate will have had practical experience with neuronal cell culture and in-vivo imaging. Specific areas of depth might include glial function, brain vascularization, optical coherence tomography, vascular corrosion casting, electrophysiology, time-release encapsulation for drug delivery, and immunocytochemistry.
