General Framework for these units:

  • First lesson always N&W about new dataset - try fitting models we already know
  • Second new kind of function - let's graph and play in desmos, identify sequences, identify situations
  • Third: let's try to fit the data with that model
  • Fourth: not part of the pattern

Bite-sized chunks

CONFIRM WE DID THE FOLLOWING

  • Read the lesson to confirm that prose makes sense
  • Make it clear when students are using their best guess to build models, vs. a computational method like LR
  • Audit prerequisites, learning outcomes, vocabulary, and keywords
  • We need to tell teachers explicitly in the lesson plan why we are choosing to use Desmos and then switch to Pyret. The learning benefit of exploration, identifying coefficients for the model they fit, computing residuals for them… rather than being given regression functions without having to think them through - Desmos Regressions tool demo
  • Update student facing goals
  • quadratic pyret feather simulation Dave Scott experiment on the moon

@schanzer Confirming I'm understanding what you're imagining for the top of converting between angles...

The notes say you wanted the answer key to have decimal equivalents and you only wanted major angles... but I'm guessing you're still imagining non-major angles will go in the table and that's when the decimal equivalents come into play?

We can discuss in our meeting.

  • add dots for coordinates
  • add arrows for directions of movement
  • surface 2pi and 360 differently
  • decimals in solution to 3 place values
  • only minors in table below

@schanzer @ds26gte Do either of you know a rule I can add to lessons/periodic3-fitting-models/modeling-recent-co2-2 that would make the autonumbering start at 8?

@schanzer Do you have a collection of ideas for this page in your head or would you also be starting from scratch?

students are given periodic situations, and have to fill in the blanks of a periodic parent function as best they can.

* create fitting-models lesson (#2214)

* move outliers discussion to threats to validity lesson folder (see #2252)

* scatter plots improvements (see #2279)

* move autodesk animation to Standard Deviation lesson (see #2281)

* update lesson order

* remove CA-specific unit

* remove beta tag from alg2 units

* split up linear, quadratic, exponential, logarithmic and periodic models units and make TODOs (#2158)

* include scatter plots and correlations in the Algebra2 pathway (#2207)

* [Alg2] split simpsons paradox out into its own lesson (#2158)

* [Alg2] periodic models improvements from SK

* [Alg2] add note about why we transform the x-axis instead of y in fitting-linear-models

* [Alg2] rewrite examples using function notation (from SK, see #1345)

* add discussion of biologically nonsensical log models (#1345)

* add aaron judge starter file to json and aaron judge hitting homerun image (see #2267, #2244, #2214)

* udpated expanded animals starter file for pyret (see #2228)

* add 'some other kind of model' as an option for quadratic-models identification wbpage

* add space for recording y-int and asymptote (see #2214)

* split modeling recent co2 (see #2214 #2255)

* update starterfiles json (see #2266)

* assessments should use the @Assessment directive

* Make it clear where students are _using a computer_ to find the best model, vs. the best fit they can guess (closes #2190)

* [Alg2] add LOs (#2223)

* flip looking for patterns (see #2214)

* fix CC standard JSON

* Major CSS cleanup for CSS graphs:

- Use CSS variables to create a form of inheritance
- Replace unit values with percentage values
- Position labels based on position of origin
- Parameterize the number of minor axes

* add new css rule for graphs to authoring file

* <code> inside .fitbruby should have slightly smaller font-size so it doesn't hit the underline #2255

* reposition rubies by -1px, closing (#2255)

* sub-pixel squeezing (#2255). If we need any more vertical space we're going to need to fix a LOT of pages...

* All questions should be numbered (fixes #2216)

* reshuffle MathJax loading, so that the new configuration location still comes before MathJax itself

* [CSS] fraction-of-a-pixel adjustment to try and get sub- and super-scripts visible in the rubies. (#2300)

* shift datasaurus and add some prose (closes #2281)

* if a PDF is more than 1 page long, only warn about it once - even if shows up in multiple pathways

* use new wording for other-proglang, and move CSS rules into the right places

* readers.rkt: Can't use mathunicode when \qquad present
