Changing camera settings (such as AE) once pipeline is created

Is there anyway (similar to v4l2-ctl) to change camera settings on the fly? It seems that one either uses vmbsrc with gst and is stuck with whatever is specified in the pipeline or one needs to go lower and use the c or python apis for acquisition. We want to be able to use vmbsrc and then change simple settings like exposure, gain, white balance on the fly.
