Use master or main as the "source code" branch, the convention is to use different branch for production build.

I agree, this should be the case

but currently, I'm hosting this from the master branch on Github pages.

Ok, just to not confuse visitors of the repo 😅. You can choose whatever branch you want for github pages to use.
