"many fields on the crucial habitat layers designate either a NULL value of 9999 or a 6 digit Hexagon ID. In the identify tool, they currently have a comma sperating the thousands number (9999 is shown as 9,999)."
Main thing to note: comma-formatted numbers are not a good solution and should be avoided.
Another thing to note: Is 9999 for null going to spell trouble for fields that can have an actual value of 9,999?
